The Cult of the Masks
Inspirations
By Caitlin McCaul
Week 1 NoteWell, with the idea that I have - I'm gonna need some solid inspirations to get this off the ground.Lets start of with the poem shall we...
So the inspiration for the poem came from a Minecraft roleplay server called The QSMP, the first multi-lingual Minecraft Server featuring creators that speak English, Spanish, German, French, Korean and Portuguese. The server followed about forty players and their stories living on an island they could never leave. An event they ran was called QSMP Purgatory which lasted two weeks. The players were split into three teams and were forced to survive for the two weeks starting from scratch.

Inspiration was drawn from Red Team or Team Bolas. Their leader, Philza, worked tirelessly to keep the other five in line, without losing their dignity and their humanity. However the the team lost their minds after other teams constantly kicked them when they were down.Ultimately that is what I wanted to showcase. And from that chaotic mess, 'The Cult of the Gas Masks' was born
The footage. That'll be a challenge. I mean how do you blend animation and live action seamlessly?Well on week one, I haven't got an answer. I might have one a few weeks from now.For now, I'll discuss the animated section inspirations and influence
Over the past few years, I've watched animatics and scrolled into art relating to Minecraft SMPs and other media. For the overall look of my experimental film, I'd like it to be modelled after two artists, @SAD-ist and @MaepleTea (both twitter and YouTube).SAD-ist has been around for years, getting popular with their animatics based on the DreamSMP. Their composition and lighting choices are key inspirations for the overall look of my experimental film.

@SAD-ist on YouTube (animatics titled 'The Fall' and 'Hog Hunt')

@MaepleTea on YouTube (animatics titled 'What It Takes To Survive' and 'Breath of Life')
MaepleTea has become popular around a year ago, with the surge of popularity that the QSMP gained. They've been a staple of the QSMP animatics for months while developing their art on twitter.Maeple's use of colour, the type of shots they use and their sound design create an unique feeling in each of their animatics. For my experimental film, I'd like to be influence by some of their shots including their shot of Philza's eyes and shot of team Bolas.
